Smoothies featuring gelatin

Gelatin: The Forgotten Protein Packed Superfood

Gelatin Protein Packed SuperfoodGelatin may conjure images in your mind of that slimy, unnaturally green and orange dessert you got in the cafeteria with your school lunches, but dessert made with gelatin is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to using this potent superfood. Gelatin is a byproduct of meat processing and comes from the bones and connective tissues of animals. It may sound unsavory, but these parts of animals are actually extremely good for you.

There was a time when people consumed nearly all of an animal, while today we simply end up with the processed and packaged meat, or muscle tissue. What we are missing out on are the nutrients found in those discarded parts. When you buy and use pure gelatin in your smoothies, you are adding back in important amino acids that have many benefits for your health.

Bone Broth Smoothie

Bone Broth SmoothieIf I could only use one word to describe this smoothie it would be: nourishing.

Nothing feels more nourishing to me than bone broth. The more I learn about this traditional superfood the more I understand why it’s so deeply nourishing.

Eclectic Elixir

This is the elixir I regularly consume tEclectic Elixiro ensure the best day ever :)

Elixirs replace smoothies in my regimen when there’s freezing temps and snow, which is about 4 months a year living in Michigan.

As with smoothies, I recommend developing a go-to elixir or two. My staple elixir is tailored to my personal nutritional needs and health goals, as should yours. Having a go-to elixir takes the guesswork out of what I’m having for breakfast and allows me to stock up on ingredients in bulk.

Blueberry Gelatin Protein Smoothie

Blueberry Gelatin Protein SmoothieThis smoothie features one of my new favorite ingredients, gelatin.

Gelatin is basically pure protein, and thus a great source of this macronutrient. I’ve had success with a couple high quality protein powders over the years. Problem is, they’re a little pricey and not a whole food, and I strive to get the majority of my nutrients from whole foods.

What is gelatin and what’s so special about it?

Natural Protein Smoothie

Natural Protein SmoothieAre you looking for a protein-packed smoothie that doesn’t call for a supplement or powder, just natural protein from the ingredients?

If you search for protein smoothies around the web you’ll find most of them call for some sort of protein powder. Not that there’s anything inherently wrong with a good protein supplement (I recommend Sun Warrior and a few whey based ones), but some people would rather get their protein from whole foods and/or don’t want to shell out the cash for a high quality product. I’m starting to lean this way myself.

Part of the inspiration for this smoothie came from a brief conversation I had in the comments of a recent recipe, Greek Yogurt Smoothies. The commenter indicated not wanting to use protein powders and how he was able to craft protein rich smoothies without.
