Smoothies featuring lemon

Lemon Lime Avocado Smoothie

Lemon Lime Avocado SmoothieThere’s nothing quite like a glass of ice-cold lemonade on a hot summer day. Except maybe this citrus smoothie, which is both refreshing and filling.

Starting your day with a little lemon juice and warm water is a proven health strategy. It wakes up your digestive system, flushes toxins, and is hydrating. To change things up and get more lemony goodness (pulp and pith are loaded with nutrition) you can blend the whole thing.

Lemony Coconut Smoothie

Lemony Coconut SmoothieThis is a refreshing and satiating smoothie featuring what I consider a delicacy. Young coconuts, also referred to as Thai coconuts, are not always easy to come by where I live and can be a bit pricey. Consider yourself lucky if young coconuts are native to where you live.

When I do get my hands on this choice food I usually guzzle the coconut water immediately after opening. It’s full of electrolytes and very hydrating. Perfect after a run or workout.

Berry Beet Citrus Smoothie

Berries, Beets, and Citrus, Oh My!

This delicious and supremely nutritious recipe is not my own creation, rather the brainchild of fellow smoothie master, Niko. She sent me this recipe a couple of months ago, but I held off on making it until I could procure beets locally. That happened last weekend at the farmer’s market and this beautiful smoothie is the result.

The nutritional powers of berries and citrus are relatively well known. Beets, not as much. Coincidentally, I just finished reading a fantastic book that I highly recommend, Eating On The Wild Side: The Missing Link to Optimum Health by Jo Robinson. The chapter on beets really opened my eyes and has convinced me to start consuming these nutritional powerhouses more often.

Aloe Vera Lemonade Smoothie

Aloe Vera Lemonade SmoothieI recently purchased aloe vera gel to use in a couple body butter recipes, but made sure to save a little for smoothies :)

In the past I’ve procured fresh aloe leaves, filleted, and scraped out the gel for use in smoothies. As it turns out this aloe vera gel is much easier to work with.

For the complete download on the health benefits and awesomeness of aloe vera, click here to view my article. The Reader’s Digest version: aloe is replete with vitamins, minerals, and essential amino acids. Its impressive nutrient profile leads to the following health benefits:
