Chocolate Blueberry Spirulina Smoothie

Chocolate Blueberry Spirulina SmoothieI’m elated to share another spectacular superfood smoothie courtesy of fellow smoothie master, Ana.

As a creature of habit who will often make the same smoothie give or take an ingredient for weeks, I wholeheartedly welcome new recipes and ingredient ideas.

This recipe contains many of my favorite ingredients such as cacao, blueberries, avocado, and spirulina as well as a nutritious new comer that I’d never considered blending.

Tahini, or sesame butter, is a paste made from ground sesame seeds. Tahini is often mixed with pureed chickpeas to make hummus. It’s packed with vitamins and minerals and can be used in a number of ways, one of which is blending in a smoothie.

Tahini supports a healthy heart and immune system. It’s rich in the minerals calcium, phosphorus, lecithin, magnesium, potassium, and iron as well as vitamin E and several B vitamins. Tahini is also a good source of protein and contains more than most nuts. Combined with the other ingredients in this recipe and you have a bonafide superfood smoothie!

Ana and I both made this with added protein courtesy of Sun Warrior. She described this smoothie as having strong flavors and I would have to agree with that assessment. Enjoy!

Chocolate Blueberry Spirulina Smoothie Recipe

The Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk of choice (I used raw milk)
  • 1/3 avocado
  • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 1 tablespoon tahini
  • 1 tablespoon cacao powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon cacao nibs (blend some and sprinkle some on top)
  • 1/2 tablespoon spirulina
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla powder or extract
  • 1/2 tablespoon honey to sweeten (substitute maple syrup or stevia)

The Add-ons

  • 1 serving of your preferred protein powder
  • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen strawberries
  • 1 cup spinach, kale, or other leafy green
  • 1 tablespoon flax or chia seeds

Show Time

Place all of the ingredients into your high-speed blender and blend for around 30-45 seconds or until nice and smooth.

Note, one cup of raw milk clocks in at 160 calories. If you’re concerned about this smoothie being too high in calories, substitute water, tea, or almond milk.
