Smoothies featuring vanilla

4th of July Smoothie

4th of July SmoothieCelebrate this national holiday with a festive and healthy red, white, and blue smoothie.

For those of you who don’t live in the United States, make this smoothie because it’s nutritious and delicious :)

One thing I always notice at holiday gatherings is a smattering of unhealthy food. Don’t get me wrong, indulging once in a while keeps you sane, and the 90/10 diet, or eating healthy 90% of the time resonates with me. However, some holiday food spreads are just plain ridiculous.

Why not bring something healthy to the table? This fruit smoothie is perfect as a tasty snack or dessert. You can even freeze it and serve as ice cream.

Avocado Cherry Smoothie

Avocado Cherry SmoothieThe one ingredient I can’t seem to make a smoothie without lately is avocado. I guess I’m addicted to the alligator pears and their rich creamy goodness. Thankfully they’re loaded with nutrition :)

About 1 and 1/2 cups liquid and half of a large or one whole avocado is a great foundation for a smoothie. From there, toss in the ingredients you have on hand or whatever sounds good and you’re golden.

For this smoothie I grabbed the frozen cherries out of my freezer and blended up a real treat. Tasty and healthy.

Chocolate Frosty Smoothie

Chocolate Frosty SmoothieOne of my favorite treats growing up was a chocolate Wendy’s frosty. I can’t remember the last time I had one (at least 5 years), but still secretly crave them :)

This smoothie is my best healthy approximation of that naughty fast-food frozen dessert. Taking unhealthy foods and making them healthy is what I’m all about.

This is a fairly basic and easy to make smoothie as long as you have cacao powder on hand. I provided plenty of add-on suggestions to take this smoothie to the next level of  healthiness.

Coffee Smoothie

Coffee SmoothieThis delicious and nutritious smoothie recipe was concocted for all the coffee and smoothie lovers out there.

Health experts can’t seem to agree on whether coffee is healthy or not. I believe in bio-individuality, meaning for some people coffee is great, while for others it’s not so good.

There’s a reason many indigenous cultures across the globe have sought out caffeine bearing plants. Caffeine, like alcohol, has been shown to extend lifespan, but only when consumed in moderation.

Here are a few of the health benefits coffee has to offer.

Apple Pie Smoothie

Apple Pie Smoothie

Why not drink your pie :)

Apple pie is one of my favorite desserts. Although it often leaves me feeling guilty after eating because I know it’s not that healthy.

This smoothie solves that problem. Think of drinking a delicious slice (or two) of apple pie that’s loaded with good nutrition leaving you feeling good about yourself after consuming.

That’s the beauty of many smoothie recipes, you can transform an otherwise unhealthy food into something that’s highly nutritious and tastes just as good, if not better.

There’s obviously apple in this recipe, and we all know an apple a day keeps the doctor away; so I’m going to focus on the health benefits of each of the three spices this recipe calls for.

Cherry Vanilla Smoothie

Cherry Vanilla SmoothieThere’s something special about cherry based smoothies and this is no exception. It’s ridiculously delicious, think ice cream, yet super nutritious.

Yes, healthy food can and often does taste as good or better than its unhealthy counterpart.

In my world cherries are a cherished delicacy. They’re only available at the farmers’ market for a month or two each year, and I hardly ever buy frozen fruit from the grocery store anymore. However, on a recent trip to Whole Foods I purchased a couple bags of frozen cherries with smoothies in mind.
